Department of Philosophy

Philosophy Department of Social Sciences University of Ankara, is a multifaceted department with extensive research focused on original topics and historical periods of philosophy. In addition to main philosophical branches such as history of philosophy, epistemological theory, metaphysics and philosophy of religion, the members of the department are also engaged in research activities in specialized fields such as artificial intelligence, existentialism and philosophy of freedom. Our academic staff are both specialized on the traditions and the methods of analytical philosophy, continental philosophy and that of Islamic philosophy. As a Department which emphasizes both intra and extra disciplinary interactions on the national and international level, our aim is to promote Eastern Philosophy in academia and to conduct globally remarkable philosophical research. Our academic staff collaborates with science by conducting philosophical studies related to fields such as history, theology, economics, computer engineering, ethics etc.

Why ASBU Philosophy?

We aim to maintain the connection between philosophy and practical life, therefore, we adopt an interdisciplinary perspective in undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. levels. Thus, one of our primary goals is to engage in international cooperation as much as possible. It is among the most important objectives of the ASBU Department of Philosophy to provide all students with language, research and interpretation skills that will contribute to their postgraduate education and professional life.

Education

Currently, our Department’s provision for undergraduate education is to equip the students with basic philosophy and social science knowledge, as well as reasoning and critical thinking skills which will be of use in all areas of life and science. These skills will allow the student to better analyze the theoretical debates of social sciences and to develop problem-solving skills. It is planned to encourage the interaction of our students with other disciplines and in this context, studies are carried out which will increase interaction with other departments. The department plans to prepare courses and programs with an interdisciplinary understanding in its graduate programs.
